Differences between Air-Core and Iron-Core Inductors
Inductors, or "coils," are used in electrical circuits to store energy in a magnetic field. There are two types of inductors: air-core and iron-core. The primary difference between them is the material used to create the core.
Air-core inductors use a hollow, non-magnetic core, usually made of plastic, ceramic, or some other insulating material. They have low inductance values and are used in high-frequency circuits. Because of their low inductance values, they are less susceptible to distortion and are more stable at high frequencies.
Iron-core inductors use a magnetic core, usually made of iron, ferrite, or powdered iron. They have higher inductance values and are used in low-frequency circuits. The magnetic core increases the inductance and makes the inductor more sensitive to changes in current and voltage.
In general, air-core inductors are more expensive than iron-core inductors, but they have better performance at high frequencies. Iron-core inductors are cheaper and more commonly used in low-frequency applications.
In summary, the choice between air-core and iron-core inductors depends on the specific application and the desired performance characteristics. The main difference between an air-core reactor and an iron-core reactor is the presence or absence of an iron core. The iron core of an iron-core reactor provides a high level of magnetic permeability, allowing for a stronger magnetic field to be produced. This results in a higher level of inductance than what can be achieved with an air-core reactor. However, the presence of the iron core can also lead to additional losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents, which can limit the efficiency of the reactor. In contrast, air-core reactors do not have these additional losses, but their inductance is lower. The choice between an air-core reactor and an iron-core reactor will depend on the specific application and the desired level of inductance and efficiency.
