How to perform oil leak repair?

To achieve oil welding repair, the following measures can be taken:

a. Considering the characteristic of rapid heat dissipation in oil leak repair, arc welding should be used for repairs instead of gas welding.

b. To prevent the oil flow from extinguishing the arc and hindering the fusion of molten droplets, materials such as asbestos rope can be used to pre-seal the leak, and then welding can be carried out. This can eliminate or reduce the oil flow. For leaks that cannot be pre-sealed, such as cracks, partial welding can be done until the leaks converge at a point, and then sealed with asbestos rope. For small leaks in thick plates, it is advisable to hammer them closed before welding. Micro-leaks are generally repaired using the rapid arc-pointing method, heating the area around the leak to promote expansion, suppress oil flow, and then welding in one go. To resist the decomposing force of residual oil flow, large arcs can be used for repairs, employing welding rods with a diameter of φ3.2 and below, with a current of 65-75A per millimeter diameter.

c. During welding, the welding rod should be moved from top to bottom, and the leak should be quickly welded shut after striking the arc.

d. Welding speed should be relatively fast. If the leak is large, it is preferable to weld for a while and then pause to allow the oil to cool.

e. It is recommended to use negative pressure oil-leak repair. Use a 2X-0.5 vacuum pump, remove the motor and its chassis, use a hand-crank for power, configure the intake port into a three-way connection for installing the vacuum pump, then use a thick-walled hose to connect to the breathing port of the oil storage tank. Measure the vertical distance from the repair site to the oil surface and determine the corresponding vacuum degree according to Figure 90-2. Choose a current of around 180A and wipe the leaked oil with a 32-1 cleaning agent. Seal the transformer, rotate the vacuum pump handle at a speed of about 50r/min. Once the specified vacuum level is reached, welding can be performed.

The advantages of negative pressure leak repair are that it can be operated with confidence regardless of whether the leak is in the lower or upper part, making the weld seam solid. Since the molten iron flows into the pores under negative pressure during welding, it does not cause fires.

Oil leak repair is feasible, but experience must be accumulated through practice. Additionally, prepare sand and foam fire-fighting equipment, and ensure there are no flammable materials nearby. Use iron plates as shields in areas where sparks may splash. The repair point should be 100-200mm below the oil level, and welding should not be carried out for an extended period to avoid an increase in pressure inside the container (except for the negative pressure method). Welding should not be performed in an empty container, and after oil leak repair, the oil should be filtered to remove hydrocarbon gases that may have entered, preventing misjudgment of results during chromatographic analysis.
