What are the characteristics of using vertical winding for transformers? (Part 1)

The choice of winding method has an important impact on the performance and quality of transformers. As a winding method, vertical winding has unique advantages and disadvantages. This article will deeply explore the advantages of vertical winding.

Content

High space utilization
The vertical winding method winds the coil in the vertical direction, which can better utilize the internal space of the transformer. Especially in some application scenarios with strict limitations on space dimensions, vertical winding can achieve a higher number of winding turns in a limited space to meet specific voltage transformation requirements. For example, in some compact electronic devices, vertical winding transformers can effectively save space and provide more installation positions for other electronic components.

1(1)

Good heat dissipation performance
Since the coils of vertical winding are arranged in the vertical direction, heat is more easily dissipated upward. This enables the transformer to dissipate heat more effectively during operation, reduce the temperature of the winding, and improve the reliability and service life of the transformer. In addition, by reasonably designing the heat dissipation structure, the heat dissipation effect of vertical winding transformers can be further enhanced, such as setting heat sinks or ventilation holes at the top and bottom of the transformer.

Reduction of parasitic capacitance
The vertical winding method can reduce the parasitic capacitance between coils. In high-frequency applications, parasitic capacitance will affect the performance of the transformer, leading to signal distortion and energy loss. The coil structure of vertical winding makes the distance between adjacent coils relatively large, thereby reducing the influence of parasitic capacitance and improving the high-frequency performance of the transformer.

In Summary

In conclusion, using vertical winding for transformer windings has advantages such as high space utilization, good heat dissipation performance, and reduction of parasitic capacitance. However, in addition to these, vertical winding of transformers also has some disadvantages, which we will explain in detail in the next article.
