What are the Normal Operating Conditions for Dry-type Transformers?

Dry-type transformers, as crucial equipment in power systems, need to meet specific conditions to ensure safe, stable, and efficient operation.

Content

 Altitude Limitation

Dry-type transformers are generally suitable for areas with an altitude not exceeding 1,000 meters. An increase in altitude leads to a decrease in air density, which will worsen the heat dissipation performance of the transformer and also affect its insulation strength. In high-altitude areas, the thin air makes it difficult to dissipate heat inside the transformer, easily causing the temperature to rise, affecting its normal operation and even damaging the equipment. When used beyond the specified altitude, special designs and adjustments for heat dissipation and insulation of the transformer are required to ensure its stable performance.

1-1(1)(1)

 Requirements for Ambient Temperature

The ambient temperature is vital for the operation of dry-type transformers. There are clearly defined ranges for the ambient temperature that they can adapt to. The maximum ambient temperature is +40 °C, the maximum daily average temperature is +30 °C, the maximum annual average temperature is +20 °C, and the minimum indoor temperature is -5 °C. An excessively high ambient temperature will reduce the load capacity of the transformer because poor heat dissipation will cause the temperature of the windings and the core to rise, accelerating the aging of the insulation and shortening the service life. In a low-temperature environment, the performance of some materials may change, and it is also necessary to ensure that the transformer can start and operate normally. Therefore, strictly controlling the ambient temperature within the specified range is a necessary condition for the normal use of dry-type transformers.

2(1)(1)

 Limitation of Operating Location

Dry-type transformers are mainly designed for indoor use. The indoor environment is relatively stable and can reduce the erosion and damage to the transformer caused by natural factors such as dust, rain, and wind-blown sand. The complexity of the outdoor environment can have adverse effects on the insulation performance, the enclosure, and the internal electrical components of the transformer. For example, moisture may cause the insulation to get wet and reduce its insulation performance, and dust accumulation may lead to partial discharges. The indoor environment can effectively avoid these situations and provide a relatively suitable operating space for the transformer.

 Characteristics of Power Supply Voltage

The waveform of the power supply voltage should be approximately sinusoidal, and the waveforms of the three-phase power supply voltage should be approximately symmetrical. This is because dry-type transformers are designed based on sinusoidal power supplies. A non-sinusoidal power supply will cause additional losses in the transformer, such as harmonic losses, which will intensify the heating of the transformer, reduce its efficiency, and may also cause electromagnetic interference, affecting its normal operation and compatibility with other electrical equipment. The symmetry of the three-phase voltage waveform can ensure the balance of the three-phase load of the transformer, avoid problems such as overload in a certain phase caused by imbalance, and ensure the stable operation of the transformer.

In Summary

In conclusion, only when meeting the conditions in aspects such as altitude, ambient temperature, operating location, and power supply voltage can dry-type transformers continuously and reliably play their important roles in power systems in converting electrical energy and ensuring the stability of power supply, providing a solid foundation for the normal operation of various electrical equipment.
