What is a saturable reactor? In which fields is it widely used?

A saturable reactor can be considered as a type of magnetic amplifier; in fact, it is a primary component of magnetic amplifiers. Its fundamental principle involves utilizing the saturation characteristics of ferromagnetic materials to control the reactance value of AC windings through minimal DC power, thereby regulating larger AC power. Consequently, a saturable reactor can be regarded as an electrical device and also viewed as a controllable reactor (controllable reactors being a category of emerging devices, such as controllable arc suppression coils and controllable parallel reactors).

Generally, magnetic amplifiers without feedback are commonly referred to as saturable reactors. However, for those reactors within self-saturating magnetic amplifiers that are series-connected with rectifying elements, they are also habitually referred to as saturable reactors. The former can be termed as choke-type saturable reactors, while the latter is known as self-saturating saturable reactors. Overall, they are collectively referred to as saturable reactors.

Saturable reactors find extensive applications in various fields, including but not limited to regulating electric furnaces and various electric heating devices, lighting control, arc welding equipment, uniform voltage regulation, impedance for limiting short-circuit currents, adjustable power factor test loads, stabilization of AC voltage, motor speed control, and contactless relays, among others.
