A steelmaking arc furnace transformer is a special type of electric furnace transformer with various categories, including three-phase steelmaking arc furnace, three-phase ore-heating furnace, single-phase arc furnace, resistance furnace, salt bath furnace, single-phase graphitization furnace, medium-frequency induction furnace, and electric slag remelting furnace transformers. Among them, the steelmaking arc furnace transformer is a major type.

Similar to general electric furnace transformers, the secondary voltage of a steelmaking arc furnace transformer is usually in the range of tens to hundreds of volts and requires adjustment within a large range. The secondary current often reaches several thousand to tens of thousands of amperes. Additionally, it needs to adapt to the three stages of the smelting process. During the melting phase, there is a high demand for power, requiring the transformer to withstand a certain multiple of short-circuit current regularly. Due to the possibility of electrode short circuits during the melting phase, it is necessary to increase the reactance to limit the multiple of short-circuit current.

During the oxidation and reduction phases, the required power is reduced, and the likelihood of short circuits is low, so the reactance should be reduced. The winding arrangement of small and medium-capacity steelmaking arc furnace transformers is interleaved between high and low voltage sections. Typically, the high-voltage winding is continuous, while the low-voltage winding is spiral. The leakage direction of the interleaved winding is lateral, preventing the induction of different potentials in the same parallel conductor segment and avoiding the generation of circulating currents between parallel conductors. Therefore, insulation between parallel conductors is not necessary. The interleaved winding can be of the direct or sandwich type, depending on the winding process.
