What is the difference between high frequency transformer and low frequency transformer?

In electronic equipment and power system, transformers play a key role, and there are many significant differences between high frequency transformers and low frequency transformers due to the differences in application scenarios and working principle.

Work Frequency: the source of the core differences

Low frequency transformer usually refers to the power frequency transformer, the working frequency is fixed at 50Hz or 60Hz, consistent with the mains frequency. According to the principle of electromagnetic induction, it carries out energy conversion under the relatively stable and low-frequency alternating magnetic field. The working frequency of the high frequency transformer is much higher than the power frequency, ranging from a few thousand hertz to a few MHz. The characteristics of high frequency makes the magnetic flux change rate very fast, which can realize energy transfer in a shorter time, which is the most fundamental difference between the two, and thus derived a series of subsequent differences.

Magnetic core material: the key to the adaptationfrequency

In view of the different working frequency, the two magnetic core materials are completely different. Low frequency transformer uses silicon steel sheet with high magnetic conductivity as the magnetic core. Under low frequency, silicon steel sheet has high magnetic conductivity and low hysteresis loss, which can effectively reduce the heating of iron core and ensure the stable operation of the transformer. High-frequency transformer needs to deal with the challenge brought by the rapid change of high-frequency magnetic field, and the high-frequency ferrite is generally selected as the magnetic core. High frequency ferrite has high resistivity, which can reduce the loss of high frequency eddy current, adapt to the rapid alternating magnetic flux under the high frequency environment, and ensure the efficient energy conversion.

Loil turns and size: variation under frequencyinfluence

Due to the difference in working frequency, the number of coil turns is also quite different from the overall size of the transformer. In order to adapt to the 50Hz low frequency, the low frequency transformer needs a coil with more turns to produce enough magnetic motive force, so that the core is large and the overall structure is relatively bulky. Due to the high frequency characteristics of the high frequency transformer, the number of turns required by the same voltage conversion ratio of the high frequency coil transformer is greatly reduced, and the size of the magnetic core can also be reduced. This not only saves the material cost, but also makes the transformer more compact, conducive to integration in electronic devices with limited space.

In Summary

To sum up, there are obvious differences between high frequency and low frequency transformers in terms of working frequency, magnetic core material, coil turns and size, and application scenarios. Understanding these differences will help us to accurately select the appropriate transformers in different fields, give full play to their effectiveness, and promote the vigorous development of the power and electronics industry.
