What role does the winding play in a transformer? And how is the winding classified?
The winding refers to the constituent part of the transformer circuit, made of copper or aluminum conductors with high electrical conductivity. Its design requires sufficient insulation strength, mechanical strength, and heat resistance.
Typically, windings are classified into two types: layer-type (layered) and coil-type (disk-type).
Layer-type windings involve winding the turns along the axial direction in a continuous manner. These can further be categorized into double-layer cylindrical (two layers) and multi-layer helical (multiple layers).
Coil-type windings involve winding the turns continuously along the radial direction to form a coil (or segment), and then arranging multiple coils along the axial direction. Coil-type windings include continuous, capacitor-insertion, and twisted configurations.
There are also intermediate winding types between layer-type and coil-type, such as foil-type and spiral-type windings. Foil-type windings have a structure similar to a cylinder, with turns wound continuously along the axial direction, often equating one turn to one layer, making it a type of layer-type winding. On the other hand, spiral-type windings generally have one turn per coil, or two, four turns per coil, with each turn continuously wound along the axial direction, forming the coil-type winding.
Layer-type windings have a compact structure, high production efficiency, and good tolerance to impulse voltage, but relatively lower mechanical strength. Coil-type windings exhibit good heat dissipation, high mechanical strength, and a broad range of applications, but their performance in tolerating impulse voltage is comparatively weaker.
For a more detailed classification of transformer windings, various subtypes include circular simple-type, foil-type, continuous-type, twisted-type, capacitor-insertion type, and spiral-type windings. Circular simple-type includes single-layer cylindrical, double-layer circular simple, multi-layer circular simple, and segmented cylindrical. Foil-type includes general box-type and segmented shrink-type. Continuous-type includes general continuous, semi-continuous, and twisted continuous. Twisted-type further divides into regular twisted and flower-twisted. Spiral-type includes single spiral (single-half spiral), double spiral (double-half spiral), and four spiral (interleaved), where interleaved refers to segments arranged in an interleaved manner from continuous or spiral-type line segments. Semi-continuous and semi-spiral refer to the continuous or spiral winding with interleaved distribution of oil channels and paper coils.
