Dry-type transformers are a type of transformer that uses insulation materials with oil-free insulation. They are commonly used in environments with high environmental requirements, such as indoor spaces and fire-prone areas. While dry-type transformers are generally more reliable compared to oil-immersed transformers, they can still experience various types of failures. Here are some common faults associated with dry-type transformers:

Insulation Aging: Insulation materials can deteriorate over time, leading to a decrease in insulation performance. This can result in insulation breakdown and damage.

Insulation Breakdown: Insulation failure or aging can lead to insulation breakdown, generating arcs between insulation layers and potentially damaging the transformer.

Overloading: Prolonged or excessive overloading can cause overheating of the transformer winding, potentially leading to localized melting and insulation damage.

Partial Discharge: Partial discharge is a form of electrical discharge in insulation materials, which can damage insulation and impact transformer performance.

Insulation Damage: Moisture, contamination, or mechanical damage to insulation materials can lead to a decrease in insulation performance, affecting the stability of the transformer's operation.

Temperature Rise: Poor ventilation, overloading, or other issues can result in elevated internal temperatures of the transformer, exceeding its design limits and reducing its lifespan.

Winding Connection Issues: Loose connections, corrosion, or poor contacts in the winding can lead to increased resistance and current imbalances.

Vibration and Mechanical Damage: External vibration or impacts can damage the insulation structure inside the transformer, affecting its performance.

Electrical Isolation Faults: Electrical isolation issues can result in current or arcing between different voltage levels, damaging the insulation.

Environmental Pollution: Environmental pollutants, dust, and other contaminants can accumulate on the insulation surface, affecting insulation performance.

To ensure the proper operation and extended lifespan of dry-type transformers, regular maintenance and inspections are crucial. Periodic checks of insulation status, temperature, vibration, and electrical performance can help detect and address potential issues early, ensuring the safety and reliability of the transformer's operation.
