How is transformer noise generated?

The noise in transformers is primarily generated by the following factors:

Magnetic Field Vibration Noise: The core of the transformer continuously magnetizes and demagnetizes under the influence of alternating current. This process causes the core to vibrate, leading to noise generation. This type of noise is commonly referred to as magnetic field vibration noise.

Winding Vibration Noise: The coils or windings in a transformer are also subject to magnetic forces when current passes through them, resulting in vibration and noise generation. This type of noise is often referred to as electromagnetic force vibration noise.

Fan Noise: In some larger transformers, fans may be used for cooling. The operation of the fan can also produce noise.

Oil Pump and Cooling System: In oil-immersed transformers, the operation of oil pumps and cooling systems may also contribute to noise.

Mechanical Noise: Mechanical components associated with the transformer, such as switches, connectors, insulation materials, etc., may also generate noise during operation.

Arcing and Discharge: In certain situations, arcing or discharge phenomena within the transformer can also result in noise, particularly during faults or abnormal conditions.

To reduce transformer noise, various measures can be taken, such as improving design, lowering current density, using vibration-damping materials, maintaining the integrity of insulation materials, and optimizing the layout of cooling systems. Additionally, for applications where noise reduction is critical, sound enclosures or noise-absorbing materials can be employed to minimize noise levels.
