Surge current is a transient, high-amplitude electrical current typically caused by one of the following reasons:

Power-On Surge: When electrical devices are first powered on, they often draw higher currents because they need to overcome the resistance of static friction, inductance, capacitance, and other factors to establish their normal operating state. This initial current surge can lead to surge currents.

Grid Faults: Faults in the electrical grid, such as power supply interruptions, short circuits, or voltage spikes, can result in current fluctuations, generating surge currents. In such cases, power equipment may experience unstable voltage or current inputs, leading to issues.

Lightning and Electromagnetic Pulses: Lightning or other electromagnetic interference can cause sudden high-voltage pulses that propagate through power lines and induce surge currents. In such situations, devices need effective protective measures to prevent damage.

Inductor and Capacitor Discharge: Inductors and capacitors are common components in circuits that can store electrical energy when the power supply is disconnected and release it when needed. When they discharge suddenly, it generates a momentary high current, causing surge currents.

To prevent surge currents from damaging electronic devices, various protective measures are usually taken, such as the use of surge protectors or voltage regulators to absorb or limit surge currents, thereby safeguarding devices from the effects of excessive current. Additionally, surge currents can be considered in circuit design and appropriate circuit design measures can be taken to mitigate their impact.
