The main modes of transformer winding damage are as follows:

1. Short-Circuit: Overcurrent or short-circuit faults can lead to a sudden increase in current within the winding, causing a short-circuit in the winding. This may result in localized heating, insulation material burning, and even the risk of fire within the winding.

2. Overheating: Prolonged high-load operation or inadequate cooling can cause the winding temperature to rise excessively, leading to insulation material aging and a reduction in its electrical insulating performance, ultimately resulting in winding failure.

3. Insulation Aging: The insulation material of the winding degrades over time, leading to decreased electrical insulation performance and an increased risk of winding damage.

4. Moisture and Contamination: Exposure of the winding to moisture and contaminating substances can cause degradation of the insulation material, increasing the risk of electrical breakdown and reducing the insulation performance of the winding.

5. Mechanical Stress: The winding may experience mechanical stress during operation, such as vibration, impact, or electromagnetic forces, which can lead to loosening or breakage of the winding conductors.

6. Overvoltages: Sudden overvoltage events, such as lightning strikes or power system faults, can cause a surge in voltage within the winding, damaging insulation material and the winding itself.
