The Difference Between Autotransformer and Isolation Transformer

2023.03.24

单相隔离变压器Transformers are widely used in electrical systems to transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another. Two common types of transformers are autotransformers and isolation transformers. Although they both perform the same basic function, they have significant differences.

An autotransformer is a type of transformer that has only one winding that serves as both the primary and secondary winding. The voltage is stepped up or down by tapping the winding at different points.

In an autotransformer, the primary and secondary winding share a common portion of the winding. As a result, the voltage on the primary and secondary sides is not completely isolated from each other. An isolation transformer, on the other hand, is a type of transformer that has two separate windings, the primary and the secondary, that are not electrically connected to each other. The primary and secondary windings are separated by an insulating material, which ensures complete electrical isolation between the primary and secondary sides.

The main difference between autotransformers and isolation transformers is their level of electrical isolation. Autotransformers have a lower level of electrical isolation between the primary and secondary sides, while isolation transformers have a higher level of electrical isolation between the two sides.

In summary, autotransformers and isolation transformers both transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another. However, the level of electrical isolation between the primary and secondary sides differs significantly. Autotransformers have a lower level of electrical isolation, while isolation transformers have a higher level of electrical isolation.
