Comparison of Autotransformer and Isolation Transformer in Terms of Capacity Calculation Based on Voltage Ratio

The capacity of a transformer is an essential parameter that determines its suitability for various applications. Autotransformers and isolation transformers can be compared based on their capacity calculation using the voltage ratio.

In an autotransformer, the voltage ratio is calculated as follows:

Voltage Ratio = (Number of Turns in Secondary) / (Number of Turns in Common Winding)

In an isolation transformer, the voltage ratio is calculated as follows:

Voltage Ratio = (Number of Turns in Secondary) / (Number of Turns in Primary)

In an autotransformer, the capacity is calculated using the following formula:

Capacity (kVA) = (Voltage x Current) / 1000

Where voltage is the voltage across the common winding, and current is the current flowing through the common winding.

In an isolation transformer, the capacity is calculated using the following formula:

Capacity (kVA) = (Voltage x Current) / 1000

Where voltage is the voltage across the secondary winding, and current is the current flowing through the secondary winding.

It is essential to note that the voltage ratio in an autotransformer is lower than that in an isolation transformer, resulting in a lower output voltage for the same input voltage. As a result, an autotransformer may not be suitable for applications that require high levels of isolation between the primary and secondary sides.

In summary, the capacity of autotransformers and isolation transformers can be compared based on their voltage ratio. Autotransformers have a lower voltage ratio than isolation transformers, resulting in a lower output voltage. As a result, an autotransformer may not be suitable for applications that require high levels of isolation between the primary and secondary sides.
