In coastal areas, the air contains salt spray, which impacts the creepage of bushings and leads to metal corrosion. To express the required leakage ratio for bushings, an equivalent salt density can be used, and the corresponding values are listed in the leakage ratio.

Equivalent salt density refers to the equivalent amount of sodium chloride in the deposited contaminants on the insulation surface of the bushing. Dissolving all the deposited contaminants on the insulation surface of the bushing and the equivalent salt density of sodium chloride in the same volume of distilled water results in substances with the same volume conductivity. This concept chemically represents an equivalent electrical performance, rather than indicating the relative salt density corresponding to the flashover voltage under the same conditions.
