How to Look at The Parallel Operation of Transformers?
How to Look at TheParallelOperation of Transformers?
The parallel operation of transformers refers to connecting the primary windings of two or more transformers to a common busbar and connecting their secondary windings to a common secondary busbar. Transformers operated in this manner are termed to be in parallel operation.
1. Advantages of parallel operation of transformers include:
(1) Meeting Demands of Large Power Grids:
Addresses the capacity requirements that a single transformer may find challenging to meet in a large power grid.
(2) Enhancing Power Supply Reliability:
Improves the reliability of power supply; if one transformer experiences a fault and is disconnected, others can continue supplying power.
(3) Adjusting Transformer Quantity Based on Load:
Allows for adjusting the number of transformers in operation according to the load, reducing losses and improving the economic operation of the power grid.
(4) Facilitating Scheduled Maintenance:
Facilitates scheduled maintenance of transformers.
(5) Reducing One-Time Investments in Power Plants and Substations :
Reduces the one-time investments required for power plants and substations.
2. Conditions and allowable deviation ranges for the parallel operation of transformers are as follows:
(1) Matching Connection Groups:
The connection groups must be the same; otherwise, it could lead to the generation of undesired circulating currents between parallel transformers.
(2) Matching Rated Voltage Ratios and Rated Voltages:
The rated voltage ratios and rated voltages of each transformer must be the same to minimize the occurrence of circulating currents.
(3) Allowable Deviation in Rated Impedance Voltage:
The allowable deviation in rated impedance voltage is ±10%. In practice, even if the rated impedance voltage values are not identical, transformers with similar actual values can still be operated in parallel. The load distribution is inversely proportional to the impedance voltage, favoring the operation of transformers with lower impedance voltage under full load, thereby optimizing operational efficiency.
