Common Professional Terms and Explanations in Transformers
Transformers, as complex electrical devices, have a range of technical terms that are commonly used in the industry. Some of the most common terms include:
(1) Turns ratio:
This is the ratio of the number of turns of wire on the primary winding to the number of turns on the secondary winding.
(2) Impedance:
This is the resistance offered by the transformer to the flow of current. It is usually expressed in ohms.
(3) Leakage inductance:
This is the inductance present in the transformer that does not couple the primary and secondary windings.
(4) Flux density:
This is the amount of magnetic flux per unit area of the core. It is usually expressed in tesla.
(5) Saturation:
This is the point at which the magnetic flux density in the core of the transformer reaches its maximum value.
(6) Hysteresis:
This refers to the tendency of the transformer core to retain some of the magnetic energy even after the magnetic field has been removed.
(7) Load loss:
This refers to the energy lost in the transformer due to the resistance of the windings and core, as well as eddy currents.
(8) No-load loss:
This refers to the energy lost in the transformer when there is no load on the secondary winding.
(9) Step-down transformer:
A transformer that reduces the voltage from the primary winding to the secondary winding.
(10) Step-up transformer:
A transformer that increases the voltage from the primary winding to the secondary winding.
(11) Turns ratio:
The ratio of the number of turns in the primary winding to the number of turns in the secondary winding.
(12) Impedance matching:
The process of matching the output impedance of a source to the input impedance of a load, in order to maximize power transfer.
(13) Leakage inductance:
The inductance in a transformer that is due to the magnetic flux that does not link both the primary and secondary windings.
(14) Load regulation:
The ability of a transformer to maintain its output voltage when subjected to changes in load.
(15) Short-circuit test:
A test performed on a transformer to determine its copper losses and equivalent resistance.
(16) Open-circuit test:
A test performed on a transformer to determine its core losses and equivalent reactance. Auto-transformer: A transformer that uses a single winding with multiple taps to provide a variable voltage output.
(17) Buck-boost transformer:
A type of transformer that provides either a step-up or step-down voltage output, depending on the wiring configuration.
Knowing these technical terms is essential for understanding the functioning and performance of transformers, as well as for diagnosing and troubleshooting problems that may arise.
